Where ancient forests whisper stories of the past and the sea shimmers with the promise of discovery, Northland in New Zealand calls to roamers looking for an adventure rich in culture, wild nature and remote escapes.

Just a few hours’ drive north of Auckland, this subtropical playground is where Aotearoa’s story begins – and where yours can unfold, one coastal curve at a time.

From twilight forest walks and offshore dive sites to art trails and geothermal pools, a road trip through Northland is a journey into the heart and soul of the land.

Explore the Land of Legends

Driving the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, you’ll soon understand why Northland is often referred to as the birthplace of New Zealand. This is where Maori and European histories entwine and where a sense of manaakitanga (hospitality) is felt in every town, trail and tide.

We begin our trip tracing the footsteps of the ancestors at Footprints Waipoua, a guided twilight walk through the mystical Waipoua Forest. Beneath the towering presence of Tane Mahuta, the Lord of the Forest, you will be immersed in stories and songs revealing the spiritual connection Maori have with the land.

In nearby Hokianga, Manea: Footprints of Kupe will deepen your understanding of these roots. Through powerful performances, storytelling and digital artistry, the experience tells the tale of Kupe – the great Polynesian navigator who first discovered Aotearoa. It’s cultural immersion done right – heartfelt, educational and unforgettable.

Coastal Cruising and Underwater Exploring

No Northland road trip is complete without heading to the water. Join Explore Group’s Discover the Bay cruise, which offers the perfect mix of scenery and serenity. Gliding through the aquamarine waters of the Bay of Islands, sail past dolphins, visit the iconic Hole in the Rock and soak up the slow pace of life with a buffet lunch onboard.

Further south, the underwater realm of The Poor Knights Islands awaits. Rated as one of the world’s best dive sites, join Dive! Tutukaka for an epic underwater day trip, exploring dramatic drop-offs, sea caves and coral-encrusted arches. Even snorkelers will find paradise here.

Relaxation and Curiosity

For a touch of geothermal bliss, head inland to Ngawha Springs, a collection of naturally heated mineral pools tucked away in native bush. These steaming waters bubble up from the earth, rich in minerals and Maori legend – perfect after a day on the road.

Back in Whangarei, the Hundertwasser Art Centre is a vibrant surprise. Inspired by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this whimsical building is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

With curved lines, bold colours and rooftop greenery, it’s a tribute to creativity and sustainability.

To dig deeper into the region’s natural heritage, make a stop at The Kauri Museum in Matakohe. With interactive exhibits on gum digging, timber milling and the mighty kauri tree, it’s a fascinating time capsule into early settler life and the importance of forest conservation.

Thanks to its subtropical climate, Northland is a great destination year-round. Summer is prime time for beaches and diving; in Spring and Autumn you’ll find fewer crowds and mild temperatures. Even in Winter, the region offers crisp air, clear days and empty coastlines for those who crave solitude.
