New Zealand’s Mt Hutt skifield is set to open two weeks ahead of schedule, making it the first mountain to open in Australasia this season thanks to an exceptional early-season snowstorm.
Over the past week, more than a metre of snow has blanketed the mountain, building a solid base and allowing the team to fast-track pre-season preparations. As a result, lifts will be spinning on weekends only from Saturday, May 31, before opening daily from June 14.

Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie says his crew is gearing up for the mountain’s earliest opening since 2009.
"Our crew has been working hard to get the mountain ready and with conditions this good, it just makes sense to get people skiing and riding as soon as we can,” James says.
"There’s already a great snow base and we’re stoked to welcome everyone back a couple of weeks earlier than planned – our earliest opening in 16 years!”
Andrew Waddel, General Manager – Australia, Tourism New Zealand says: "This is a fantastic start to the ski season in Aotearoa New Zealand. We know Australians often wait for that first snow dump of the season before seriously planning their Winter holidays and with an early start, Australians can book with confidence.

"Whether you're an avid skier or looking for a snowy escape, New Zealand is ready to welcome you. Now’s the time to start planning your trip and make the most of the epic ski season ahead.”
The early opening will include key lifts and terrain, with more to come as snow and weather conditions allow. Guests are encouraged to check the Mt Hutt website and social channels for the latest on what to expect as opening day approaches.
The original scheduled opening date was June 13. Mt Hutt will now be open King’s Birthday weekend (May 31- June 2) and June 7-8 before opening daily from June 14 until its scheduled closing day October 12.
Mt Hutt is a great place to learn how to ski or snowboard for the first time, along with being family-friendly with a range of childcare options, kids’ ski and snowboard lessons, rentals and facilities to cater to every family’s ski holiday needs.
