Where to Take Dad for a Brew – Five Spots for a Latte Father’s Day Love!

Dad, words cannot espresso how much you bean to me!

Father’s Day on Sunday, September 3 is the perfect opportunity to remind the Dads and father figures in our lives how much we care about them.

The first Father’s Day was thanks to the daughter of an American single dad – William Jackson Smart. A Civil War veteran from Washington, William’s wife died during the birth of his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd.

He raised Sonora and her five older siblings on his own. With Mother’s Day celebrated each year, Sonora felt her Dad and fathers everywhere, deserved a special day too. She campaigned for the first Father’s Day and it was held in William’s birth month of June in 1910.

All Dads love a good cup of Joe and what better way to treat him than a coffee and breaky at your local café. Here are five of our faves:

Discover a world of flavour and diversity of coffee origins at ONA Sydney on Marrickville Road in Marrickville. Along with everyday house coffee, choose from an extensive range of rare and exciting selections preserved at sub-zero temperatures – the coffee cellar is like a wine list with more than 68 different varietals on the menu, along with all-day brunch fare.

Order Dad an adventurous Gateway brew on Sunday, made with beans from Ethiopia, Honduras and El Salvador to go with housemade pita bread, spread with baba ganoush and topped with salad, coriander oil, parsley and roasted nuts.

For the finest quality beans from around the world and fare with flair, try Flying West Coffee Roasters Café on Fellowship Drive in Eumundi. This wholesome and open-plan industrial-style café and specialty coffee roaster at first resembles a big tin shed, until you step inside to discover an ambient, modern and urban dining space.

With a goal to match food with quality, specialty-grade coffee, expect to sample brunch plates of pasture-raised eggs, bacon, herbed mushrooms, oven-baked cherry tomatoes and maple-roasted sweet potato on sourdough.

Stroll up from the sands of Horseshoe Beach after a Father’s Day walk to refuel and recharge at Malt & Honey – Walk Up Café on Livingstone Street in South West Rocks. A rustic vibe of recycled timber, shabby chic tables and a sunny alfresco area offers the ideal spot to linger over a Suntory coffee while checking out a menu of café favourites.

Treat Dad to an SWR Beach burger, with bacon, cheese, beetroot, fresh tomato, lettuce, fried egg and caramelised onion on a classic bun with fries, or a smoked salmon Caesar salad, enjoyed with an iced coffee or thick shake.

Find your way along St Hellier Street in Heidelberg Heights to find favourite neighbourhood café, Sunnyside. On balmy Melbourne days, enjoy an aromatic brew in the alfresco area where black wire chairs and potted palms beckon for a leisurely catchup with friends, while indoors is light and bright with white subway tiles, blond wood tables and trailing greenery setting the scene for brunch and lunch dining.

Tempt Dad on Sunday with a single-origin coffee to go with prawn and chilli scrambled eggs, spinach and Parmesan, or corn and zucchini fritters, guacamole, smashed pea and cherry tomato salsa, chilli jam, coconut minted yoghurt, lemon wedge and a sprinkle of sumac.

Settle Gretel Café on McLeod Road in Carrum is all dressed up and excited to join the local daily caffeine routine. A cool pale pink and aqua vibe sets the tone for lingering over a Four Rascals latté, either alfresco, watching the world pass by, or indoors where fresh blooms and softly glowing globes blend seamlessly with blond wood table settings.
