Recession Food Hacks: Fro-Yo Swap to Save Big

New research has confirmed Australian fro-yo fans deepening obsession with frozen yoghurt, found to be spending a jaw-dropping $750 a year on the treat - and up to 19 minutes a day queuing for it.

Nearly a quarter of these Aussies (24 per cent) make it part of their daily routine.

Celebrity Chef, Miguel Maestre told us earlier this week his biggest food trend of 2025 was frozen yoghurt, with him and his kids loving adding all the toppings.

The Indulgence Index, commissioned by Gippsland Dairy, revealed a nationwide cultural shift driven by the new generation of spenders, Gen Z.

Following in the footsteps of the Avocado Generation - millennials who made lifestyle a priority over savings - this new wave of consumers, dubbed in this research as the Fro-Yo Generation, is doubling down on indulgence, investing both time and money into this feel-good food category.

The study found that one in three (32 per cent) frozen yogurt consumers visit a frozen yoghurt store on a weekly basis, making the sweet treat a regular occurrence.

Alongside splashing cash, the consumers are spending more time queuing at frozen yoghurt stores than at their grocery shop. The average wait time for a frozen yoghurt was 8.4 minutes, longer than the average grocery store self-checkout wait of 6.8 minutes.

To help Aussies indulge more affordably and get their fro-yo fix, Gippsland has unveiled a simple three-step ‘hack’ for enjoying rich, creamy frozen yoghurt from the comfort of your own home with Gippsland Dairy Mix-Ins - no queuing necessary and a saving on the wallet.

Gippsland Fro-Yo Hack:

Step 1: FLIP the mix-in toppings into the yoghurt side of the dual-compartment container.

Step 2: FOLD your toppings with a spoon to combine the creamy yoghurt with the mix-in toppings.

Step 3: FREEZE into at-home frozen yoghurt by popping Gippsland Dairy Mix-Ins into the freezer at -18 C for two hours for the perfect consistency.
