Melbourne’s East Has a Filipino Seafood Feast You Need to See to Believe

Melbourne’s East Has a Filipino Seafood Feast You Need to See to Believe

Filipino food is having a moment, but at Kalye Marinas Filipino Grill and Seafood in Ashburton, the cuisine is about much more than following a trend. Set on Warrigal Road, this owner-operated restaurant brings together the bold flavours, generous portions and unmistakable sense of community that sit at the heart of Filipino dining.

The best way to understand Kalye Marinas is to arrive hungry. The menu is designed for sharing, grazing and discovering something new, moving from Filipino street-food favourites and charcoal-grilled meats to sizzling classics, comforting noodle dishes and one seriously impressive seafood experience.

At the centre of it all is the restaurant's signature Seafood Boil – a feast built for the table rather than the individual plate. The menu's BIGBANG Boat takes things to another level, bringing together prawns, squid, mussels, clams, lobster, king crab, mud crab and blue swimmer crab, alongside corn, potatoes and eggs. It is the kind of spread that turns dinner into an occasion.

The rest of the menu explores the breadth of Filipino cooking. Start with the likes of Mayo Seafood Dumplings filled with crabmeat and shrimp, or the Kalye Basket, a mix of calamares, fishball and kikiam served with house-made manong sauce. There are also pork and chicken barbecue skewers, grilled pork belly, crispy chicken skin and chicharon bulaklak for those looking to sample the more indulgent side of Filipino street food.

Then come the dishes that have become synonymous with Filipino cuisine. Sizzling Pork Sisig arrives loaded with roasted pork, onion, chilli and mayo, while Crispy Pata delivers a fried pork hock with salsa, vegetables and a special dipping sauce. The Crispy Pork Kare-Kare pairs crispy pork hock with a rich peanut-based sauce, beans, bok choy and eggplant, while Grilled Lamb Cutlets are glazed in Filipino adobo sauce with garlic, soy and vinegar.

Comfort food is another major part of the experience. Tapsilog combines dried cured beef sirloin with garlic rice, fried egg, pickled vegetables and fresh salsa, while Tocilog takes the same satisfying format in a sweeter direction with sticky cured pork. There is also Bangsilog with grilled milkfish, garlic rice and egg, alongside Lomi Overload, Palabok and Pansit Batil Patong.

For groups, the Surf and Turf Platter is another reason to bring friends. It combines chicken and pork barbecue with grilled prawns, fried baby octopus, mussels, clams and an assortment of seafood sauces. The Street Food Platter takes a different route, packing pork and chicken skewers, isaw, spring rolls, siomai, fishball, chicken skin, cheesy chips and rice into one sprawling introduction to Filipino favourites.

And then there is dessert.

Kalye Marinas doesn't hold back here either. The Halo Halo Snow is an elaborate combination of ube snowflakes, house-made ube ice cream, ube halaya, leche flan, young coconut, corn, caramelised banana, jackfruit, nata de coco, coconut milk and cornflakes. Other options include Mango Graham Snow, Buko Pandan Snow, Ube Banana Split and Turon with ube ice cream.

Drinks continue the Filipino influence, with iced ube and buko pandan lattes, calamansi juice, sago't gulaman and a selection of colourful mocktails and smoothies.

What makes the experience particularly appealing is the sense of purpose behind it. For more than three years, the Kalye Marinas team has travelled throughout Victoria, serving at multicultural festivals and introducing thousands of people to Filipino food and culture. That community focus has become part of the restaurant's identity, creating a dining room that feels welcoming whether Filipino cuisine is already familiar or completely new.

Today, Kalye Marinas has restaurants in Geelong, Ashburton and Hampton, with another location on the way. Yet the philosophy remains refreshingly simple: bring people together, put generous Filipino food in the middle of the table and make everyone feel welcome.

At Ashburton, that philosophy is served with plenty of flavour – and, if you order the BIGBANG Boat, an awful lot of seafood.
