Be Amaized by Celebrating National Corn on the Cob Day at these Four Restaurants.

Let’s face it, eating corn on the cob can be a messy affair and that’s why etiquette rules say it should never be served at formal occasions, or ordered on a first date.

There’s something about sinking your teeth into those sweet corn kernels smothered in melted butter…make sure you have some on your plate on Saturday, June 11 to celebrate National Corn on the Cob Day 2022.

According to one of history’s leading etiquette specialists American author Emily Post, corn on the cob shouldn’t be served at lunch or dinner, but if it is, ‘one must not attack it ferociously or greedily’.

Corn or maize is an ancient plant native to the Americas and is believed to have been first cultivated in Mexico, before being spread around the world via European explorers in the 15th and 16th Centuries.

Although the most common colour of corn is yellow, it can also be cultivated to be purple, green, blue-grey, red, white and even black. Here are four of our fave restaurants to chow down on Saturday:

Find a new modern Mexican fusion dining experience on the sandy shores of the Gold Coast at Agave Rosa on Musgrave Street in Kirra. This fun and funky restaurant and taqueria sets a relaxed dining vibe with neon signage, couches for chilling out with a Margarita in hand and cacti, ideal for catching up with amigos over a cerveza and burrito.

Drop in on Saturday for the ultimate hibachi corn on the cob, mention this AGFG offering to receive 20% off all corn cob dishes; before devouring a crispy skin pork belly taco, with pickled cabbage, guacamole and salsa verde.

Say hola to tacos and tequila at The Happy Mexican on Hoddle Street in Abbotsford. This trendy restaurant rocks a laneway dining area with strings of Edison bulbs, a vibrant Day of the Dead mural and trailing greenery; while indoors senors and senoritas hang out with a cocktail in a colourful vibe of red, yellow and blue, sombreros and distressed timber.

Celebrate all things corn with delicious street-style cobs, followed by signature crispy tortillas, served with ceviche prawns, cucumber, red pickled onion and green apple, topped with salsa verde, guacamole and chipotle mayo.

It’s a place where people go to share a smile, a laugh, a cold drink and tasty Mexican fare with flair at Hello José on Peel Street in West Melbourne. Don’t expect to say hola to José, he seems to disappear at the drop of a sombrero, at this taqueria - which rocks a Mexican beach vibe with an alfresco Cerveza Garden, strung with flags, lights and a disco ball - while green plastic crates topped with cushions provide seating.

Every day is corn on the cob day here, but on Saturday take to the heated garden to enjoy char-grilled corn, spiced-up cream, Parmesan, sumac and lime; then wrap your hands around a beer-battered fish taco with pickled cabbage and green salsa.

Gorge on a fiesta of flavours at Loco Mexican, a vibrant hot spot to see and be seen in Victor Harbor in the upstairs level of the Harbor Mall. Radiating warm and lively colours, inside feels energetic with a wallpaper backdrop of orange and red apartments and tables in burnt orange adding character, while a window gives a sneak peek into kitchen creations.

It’s fiesta time on Saturday with Mexican corn, chipotle, queso and lime as an ideal starter; while a Loco burrito with pulled braised beef, rice, salsa, queso, drunken beans, salsa verde, pasilla chilli relish, salad and sour cream always hits the mark.
