The Murray River is one of the longest navigable rivers in the world, stretching 2,700 kilometres from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in north-eastern Victoria to journey's end near Adelaide in South Australia. The Mildura & Murray Region is famed for its historic towns, superb food & wine, and outdoor activities. The rural community of Echuca is home to the largest paddle steamer fleet in Australia which runs cruises down the Murray. Alternatively, hire a houseboat and explore the river at your own pace stopping along the way to experience the restaurants, wineries and local shops that line its banks. The township of Mildura, which derives its name from an Aboriginal word 'Red Earth', is renowned for its fresh local produce, wineries, and superb culinary offerings. A great base for exploring the Australian outback, be sure to make the effort to see the World Heritage listed Mungo National Park while you’re here. Shepparton, Swan Hill, & Yarrawonga are also worth a visit.

When to Visit Mildura & The Murray

Mildura & the Murray Region is known for its dry summers and cool winters. During winter the days are typically mild and the night’s cold. Daytime temperatures average around 15 deg CC, while in the evening it is not uncommon for the temperature to drop to 5 deg CC or below. Most rain falls during the winter. Summer is hot with plenty of sunshine. Daytime temperatures average in the low thirty's, however higher temperatures are not uncommon. Spring and autumn bring warm days with chilly evenings.

Getting Around Mildura & The Murray

Mildura is located approximately 550km from Melbourne and approximately 400km from Adelaide. A number of regional airlines service the region from Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. Coach travel and train links are also available from major cities. There are a number of tour operators operating in and around the area. Buses and taxis allow you to get around Mildura itself however the best way to discover the remainder of region is with your own vehicle.
