Gippsland Restaurant, Accommodation & Travel Guide

About Gippsland

Occupying Victoria's eastern corner, Gippsland covers a vast and diverse landscape ranging from unspoilt beaches to enormous lakes and mountain ranges. Wilsons Promontory is renowned for its stunning bush, coastal scenery and acclaimed walking trails. Central Gippsland is gourmet country, dotted with wineries, cheesemakers, farmers' markets, and fruit & berry farms. Explore historic gold towns and maritime villages such as Walhalla and Port Albert, or take to the slopes and spend a day skiing at the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort - the closest downhill ski area to Melbourne. The Gippsland Lakes are fed by the waters of five major rivers and fringed by Ninety Mile Beach providing great swimming, fishing, boating and sailing. Dine al fresco at a lakeside restaurant or pub, have a family picnic by a river, or take a stroll through the waterfront villages of Paynesville, Metung or Lakes Entrance. And be sure to visit Croajingolong National Park, a World Biosphere Reserve.

When to Visit Gippsland

Gippsland enjoys a temperate climate of mild temperatures with four distinct seasons. Summer temperature range 25-38oC. Winter temperatures range between 10 to 20oC. Autumn is glorious with balmy days and brilliant blue skies, while in spring the area comes alive with wild flowers and an abundance of animal life; (18 to 25oC).

Getting Around Gippsland

Gippsland is an expansive area located in the eastern corner of the state. Undoubtedly the best way to truly experience the area is by car, however the region is accessible by public transport from Melbourne via the V/Line train service which operates every day as far as Sale with connecting buses to Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. A 4WD is recommended if you looking to detour from the main roads and tackle the unsealed roads and tracks throughout the forests. Many forest tracks are closed during the wetter months (usually between June and November). If you want to explore the lakes in the area, it’s best to have a boat. If you don’t have your own boat, you can hire a yacht or cruiser, or get a charter tour to show you the highlights.
