Canberra Restaurant, Accommodation & Travel Guide

About Canberra

Canberra is the city that Federation created. Founded in 1913, Australia’s Capital is unique in that it was planned from the beginning as a garden city. It is sometimes referred to as the bush capital because pockets of bushland reserve extend almost to the city centre and over half of the Australian Capital Territory. Over half of the city is parkland & open space dotted with picnic areas. Australia's national government sits here, as does the highest court of Australia. Many of the most important monuments in the country are located in Canberra and they're visited by millions of people each year. Some of these attractions include the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia & National Museum of Australia. Canberra has five sign-posted Tourist Drives which take in most of the sights. Each begins at the City Hill Lookout, and three concentrate on the central area of Canberra, while the others take in the popular stops on the city outskirts & beyond.

When to Visit Canberra

The four seasons in Canberra are very distinct, but there's a lot of sunshine year-round. Spring and Autumn are possibly the best time to visit (Sept-Nov and Mar-May). There's a magnificent display of russet and golden foliage as the hot, dry summer cools to balmy temperatures. Spring is warm, colourful and invigorating. Summers are hot and winters can get pretty cold (occasionally with snow).

Getting Around Canberra

Canberra is located 300 kilometres from Sydney and 655 kilometres from Melbourne and is accessible by road, train and air transport. Canberra Airport is located approximately a 15 minute drive from the city. Public Transport, which include buses and taxis are in abundance and because Canberra is a planned city getting around by car is easy. The roads are excellent and signage made simple and obvious.
