Home-style cooking prepared with love is on the menu at Essen Restaurant on McGregor Terrace in Stanthorpe. With a name meaning to eat in German, a vine-covered pergola shades the front door of this quaint and rustic venue, where cosy table settings and potted greenery set the scene to share honest food with good friends and family. From a weekly changing menu showcasing produce from the garden and Granite Belt region, expect choices such as mahi-mahi, horseradish crème, pickled shallot, green oil and soft herbs to start; before duck breast, celeriac purée, black garlic, white balsamic, strawberry compote, Spring greens and jus, or kingfish, brandade, XO sauce, pickles and purple sapphire chips. For an indulgent finish, try roast strawberry sorbet, labneh, panela meringue and elderflower.

A Wonderful Find in Wine Country
My first dining experience at Essen is one to remember. With friends we shared the set menu amongst us. I'd heard good things, and it lived up to all of them. The ingredients first class, and so fresh. I really can't wait to dine there again....oh, and it's BYO, which is lucky. Based in a small cottage in Stanthorpe, this restaurant is in the heart of a place they call Granite Belt Wine Country, so we really had a genuine local wine and food experience. Thank you to the family team behind the scenes, we just loved it!
