A drink on the waterfront
Due South is situated on the Albany waterfront in the shadow of the striking Entertainment Centre. A large, open and airy space it serves up traditional tavern and pub food, along with a few other meals not from that playbook – a feature of the food being aged meats – and the refrigerated meat locker near the kitchen area attracts a good deal of interest. We didn’t get the opportunity to try the food on this visit, but we were able to sit back and have a drink looking out over the water from a window – an absurd licencing restriction over drinking on the deck over the water at the front once again confirms my view about a lack of intelligence among the licencing authorities in WA. Turning to the wine list – this would be the best local wine list we saw on our trip – and there were a number of strong contenders. Constructed solely from local, Great Southern offerings it is a splendidly curated list, covering all of the Great Southern sub regions, ranging across varieties and styles – Due South should be applauded for this. An attached bottle shop allows visitors to seek out and purchase many of the region’s offerings – another plus for the venue. Our waiter was friendly, welcoming and professional, and we came away pleased we had dropped in, and determined to come back and sample the food when next in Albany. This is an excellent addition to the eating and dining spots in town and a precursor to more waterfront destinations as the area around Peace Park and the Entertainment Centre continues to develop and grow.
