1 kg apples, peeled and chopped
1 Tbs plain flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
50 g butter
Crumble:
2 cups self-raising flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
150 g butter, cubed and softened
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Set up a camping oven, or heat a conventional oven to 170 C and line a tin with baking paper.
To cook the apple filling, place the apples, flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter and 1/4 cup of water in the camping oven or dish. Stir together, then place over the heat or in the oven for 5 minutes, until the apples have softened. Bring them out to cool for a bit.
In the meantime, for the crumble, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and rub everything together with your fingertips until it’s all crumbly. If you like chunkier crumbs, squeeze small portions into chunks (I like a mix of both).
Sprinkle the crumble mix over the apple mix and place it back on the heat or in the oven. If you’re using a camping oven, put some coals on top to make it extra toasty. Cook for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the crumble looks golden and the apples are fully cooked.
