Wombeyan Caves Overview

Over millions of years a maze of underground passages, streams and caverns has developed. Known to the Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years, the Wombeyan Caves were re-discovered by Europeans in 1828 when explorers stumbled across a vast opening leading into the amazing depths below. The Caves feature vast caverns adorned with striking and delicate formations in a range of sizes, shapes and textures. These limestone caves are both remarkable and beautiful.

A few words from Wombeyan Caves

A short, spectacular drive from Sydney, Canberra or Wollongong will bring you to a hidden valley where you'll find the Wombeyan Caves. You can explore the Figtree, Wollondilly, Junction, Kooringa and Mulwaree caves on a variety of guided and self-guided tours. Heritage theme tours are also available, taking you back to the 1800s and the Figtree Cave is regarded as the state's premier self-guided cave experience. The cave is accessed via a token-operated door after a short walk from the visitors centre. Figtree then becomes a totally time and hands-free experience with the interpretation and lighting electronically controlled. The trip through the cave, culminating in Victoria Arch, is easily accessed by all ages.

Activities include cave tours, camping, hiking, canyoning, tennis and swimming. This is also an ideal place for bird watching and photography. A variety of guided tours are available at Wombeyan Caves, and can be taken over one or two days. Take the next available tours or choose your own combination.

Take your time, relax and explore the magic that is Wombeyan's underworld. Between tours, enjoy the free above ground activities or a leisurely picnic lunch on any of the well grassed flats.
