Adelaide Hills Restaurant, Accommodation & Travel Highlights

About Adelaide Hills

Just a short drive from the center of Adelaide, the Adelaide hills is a pocket of paradise surrounded by manicured vineyards and market gardens, natural Australian bushland and lush green pastures. As the oldest wine region in South Australia, (the first vines were planted in 1839, just three years after settlement), the Adelaide Hills has had time to get things right. Today the cool-climate wines of the Adelaide Hills stand among the most prestigious in Australia. The region is home to more than 200 grape growers and 50 wine labels including famous names like Petaluma, Nepenthe, Shaw & Smith, Ashton Hills and Chain of Ponds at Gumeracha. Drive the region's many scenic routes and you'll find rolling hills, leafy valleys and picture-postcard views at every turn. What ever the season, each period offers its own appeal: leafy landscapes ablaze with changing colours in autumn; warm fires and historic cottages in winter; blooms and berries in spring; and cool cellar door retreats in summer.

When to Visit Adelaide Hills

Adelaide Hills have a temperate climate enjoying mild winters and dry summers. Most rain falls during the winter, whilst summer (particularly inland) can be very hot. Spring, between September – November, averages 12 - 25oC; Summer, between December – February, averages 15 - 29oC; Autumn, between March – May, averages 14 - 25oC; and Winter, between June – August, averages 8 - 17oC. The best time to visit is in summer when it is warm and relatively dry. Spring and autumn are also pleasant with low rainfall, although temperatures get a little cooler.

Getting Around Adelaide Hills

The start of the Adelaide Hills is a leisurely 20 minute drive from Adelaide’s CBD. The closest Airport is Adelaide Airport. Regular buses run from Adelaide to several Hills towns however, unless on an organised tour, it is highly advisable that you hire a vehicle and enjoy the scenery. The roads throughout the Hills are in good condition and easily accessible.
