There are cafés you pop into and cafés you linger in. Heaps Good Food Store on Burringbar Street is both.
The menu changes daily, which keeps things interesting, but the format stays reassuringly the same: three hotpot specials, chicken, beef, and vegan, a handful of sandwiches, and a bone broth made in-house that earns its reputation. The Beef Massaman is rich and deeply spiced without being heavy. The Chicken Congee is the kind of thing you crave on a cold morning. The Thai Coconut Curry is vegan and genuinely one of the best things on the menu, bright, fragrant, and satisfying without compromise. And if the Chocolate Olive Oil Torte is on the pass, do not walk past it.
The space is easy and welcoming, the kind of place where you end up at the long shared table talking to someone you've never met, or outside in the sunshine wondering why you ever scheduled anything after lunch. The staff are warm and friendly in a way that feels completely natural, not performative.
