About Hachi08

Begin your Japanese culinary adventure at Hachi08 on Wakefield Street in Adelaide. In true Izakaya style, this bar and restaurant is an ideal spot for a tasteful lunch, or linger over after-work drinks with friends, sipping a mellowing cup of sake. Combining the Japanese lucky number 8 with the word to mingle, Hachi blends rustic wooden tables and bench seating with polished concrete for an industrial feel, while softly glowing pendents add a moody touch to evening dining. Expect a menu of pub fare with a twist, with plates like a katsu burger on a brioche bun with cabbage salad and cocktail sauce; or delve into seared beef tataki with citrus ponzu. From the grill comes marinated charcoal chicken thighs with takuan tartar; while for a sweet finish try matcha crème brulee and ice cream.

Pleasant staff and good service. When booking, ask for a table under one of the (few) lights - we were sharing a smartphone with a torch function in order to read the menu. Unusually good list of wines by the glass. Although listed as tapas and restaurant, a lot of the small plates and tapas weren't really the sort of thing readily shared by people not in love with each other. I had the scallops and black rice risotto. Scallops excellent, with a dressing that had me wondering if perhaps the dim lighting would let me lick the plate. The risotto was interesting but - even allowing for the mixes of rice - perhaps a little undercooked for my taste. But we enjoyed the meal and I need to return to try some of the other items on the menu.
