Comma Food and Wine is a quiet Moorabbin surprise
Comma Food and Wine is easy to underestimate. Tucked just outside Moorabbin Station, it first looks like a simple suburban restaurant, calm and modest rather than loud or crowded. Inside, the mood sits between casual neighbourhood dining and fine dining. Smaller tables, soft lighting and measured music give the room an intimacy that feels relaxed but considered.
The setting is restrained. There is nothing dramatic about the plates or tableware, yet that works in the restaurant’s favour. The food arrives looking polished and generous, proof that Chef Joel and his kitchen are doing something thoughtful.
The drinks follow the same logic. The wine list is not extensive, but it feels precise, with enough variety to suit the food. A cocktail special, the Clouded Pisco, became an early highlight. The bartender explained its flavours and purpose with care, then offered a small taste of pisco on its own. The cocktail was balanced and expressive, carrying the character of the spirit without becoming harsh.
The best decision was taking manager Elijah Ancora’s recommendation and ordering the Chef’s Selection. À la carte was available, but this felt like the heart of the restaurant. Rather than a fixed degustation, the meal moved with the table, with Chef Joel deciding each course as the evening unfolded.
Ancora’s service was a highlight. Calm, warm and confident, he explained each dish with the detail of someone who understood every component. It never felt scripted. His descriptions changed depending on what each table wanted to hear. Learning that he is only 19 and arrived from fine dining made the polish more surprising.
The food matched that confidence. Lebanese aubergine with Sichuan glaze was rich and memorable. Lamb ribs arrived smoky and crisp. Hanger steak was carefully cooked and finished with a savoury umami butter.
Comma is not flashy. It is a calm Moorabbin restaurant with serious intent, thoughtful food and service beyond what the setting first suggests.
Amazing food and cocktails, reinvigrating Moorabbin's dining scene
Love the food and cocktails here, and the atmosphere is lovely. We were hesitant at first, because the exterior looks like a closed office with minimal signage and no lighting, and the billboard above looks like a Vodafone store is soon to open, which was pretty weird to say the least. The also don't open every night, so it's best to check their site for hours, but still well worth your effort!
Awesome delicious down to earth food
