About Goldfields-Esperance

The Goldfields-Esperance is a region of historic townships, brilliant, starry nights and wide open spaces. This is the place for true adventure where driving becomes an activity in itself rather than a means to an end. Kalgoorlie-Boulder lies at the heart. Still a thriving mining town, Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a living museum where sightseers can visit the world’s largest open-cut goldmine, explore an old mine shaft or try their hand at gold-panning. When gold was struck in 1893, Kalgoorlie found itself sitting on the richest square mile of gold-bearing ground in the world. Even today there remains an estimated 30 million ounces to be dug up. To the south on the coast, you’ll find Esperance. In extreme contrast to the interior, the rugged coastline and sandy coves around Esperance make an ideal location for lovers of sun and spectacular beaches. People flock to this small coastal town from far and wide for world class windsurfing, diving, rugged scenery and challenging coastal walks.

When to Visit Goldfields-Esperance

Due to the fact the region is so large there are a variety of climates. Generally the further north is warmer and more arid where much of the area is covered by desert, however winter nights can fall below zero. During the summer period the average daily temperatures range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, though some days can reach over 40 degrees Celcius. Daytime winter temperatures range from 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is low and extremely variable. The south of the state is the Mediterranean zone, where there is little rainfall in the summer and the winds are hot and dry except for the occasional afternoon coastal sea breeze. Winters are typically the south coast’s wet season.

Getting Around Goldfields-Esperance

Traveling through the Goldfields-Esperance region can mean huge distances. There are regional airports with commercial flights to Esperance and Kalgoorlie Boulder. By car, the fastest route to Kalgoorlie Boulder from Perth is via the Great Eastern Hwy. Within the major towns, getting around is relatively easy with local bus and taxi services. However to really discover the region you best have your own vehicle. Most of the popular attractions are accessible via sealed roads, however a 4WD is recommended if you truly want to go exploring. Be sure to have adequate provisions, beware of wildlife (especially at dawn and dusk), and let someone know where you are going.
