Tiny Town - Huge Menu

he Fernery Bistro at the Heritage Motel in Dorrigo has a menu that runs to four blackboards and making choices takes some whitling down. There was a board of A La Carte offerings, one with your typical pub fare (all under $20), one with Wood fired Pizzas and one with Desserts (trust me- if you can manage dessert after finishing their very generously portioned mains then you're a better man than I am). We settled on the Crispy skinned Hoi Sin Duck with Orange Glaze served with local King Prawn Fried Rice and the Slow cooked Lamb Shanks served with Green Beans, Creamy Mash and Lamb Jus. The duck was as described - Delightfully Crispy skinned and tender and succulent within. The sweetness of the Orange Glaze and Hoi Sin set if off perfectly. The Fried rice was surprisingly 'buttery' in flavour and very tasty. My husband was salivating over the Shanks before his first mouthful. The lamb fell away from the bone and was tender and juicy. The Jus was perfect and the deep fried sweet potato shavings gave a sweet and crunchy edge to an otherwise traditional shank. It's honestly worth a visit to Dorrigo just to eat here. (PS- They also have Waterfalls up there)

The Fernery Bistro Overview

Built in 1925, the aptly named Heritage Hotel Motel in Dorrigo is home to The Fernery Bistro, a family friendly venue of choice for both locals and those travelling through. Constructed by Michael Feros, the grandeur of this heritage listed locale is a classic example of Australian architecture, maintaining a timeless style from the inside out. Furnished with the original 1925 dining room tables topped with Dorrigo hoop pine, The Fernery Bistro radiates with the warm homely touches of honey toned wood, exposed brick and lush dangling ferns. Regularly changing, the Mod Oz menu focusses on country style meals made with fresh, local produce and may include choices such as slow cooked spiced silverside with white parsley sauce, or steak and kidney pie with roasted sweet potato and green beans.
