About HM Prison Geelong

The maximum security prison closed its doors in 1991, but what remains within the bluestone building is Geelong history. Open for tours, HM Prison Geelong - otherwise known as Old Geelong Gaol - tells the story of notorious Australian prisoners, from bushranger Frank McCallum to criminal Mark "Chopper" Read recreating the tales from within the grim cells, watchtowers and hallows at large. A fascinating piece of Geelong's still standing history, Old Geelong Gaol allows visitors a unique insight into old prison life, with a variety of displays and hands on activities throughout the tour.
