Devonport & the Northwest is a region of immense diversity. At its heart is the City of Devonport which can be found on the banks of the Mersey River in the centre of Tasmania’s fertile Mersey/Forth Valley. Devonport has much to offer with cosmopolitan cuisine and excellent shopping. From Devonport, take the scenic drive west along Tasmania’s Holiday Coast to the seaside towns of Ulverstone, Penguin, Burnie, Somerset, Stanley and Smithton – the views are superb. From Smithton, the highway begins its last leap westward to Marrawah. Here the last Tasmanian tiger was captured in the wild - it happened long ago, but there have been many intriguing reports of sightings in the same area. Devonport & the Northwest region is also home to the internationally renowned Lake St Clair National Park and Cradle Mountain. The Mountain is one of Tasmania’s most popular attractions. The track to the top of the mountain (1,545 metres/5,068 feet above sea level) is an eight-hour return walk.
When to Visit Devonport & The Northwest
Devonport itself reaches an average maximum temperature of 22oC in January and 13oC in June. The west coast can be wild, wet and savage, bearing the full brunt of the Roaring Forties. The North coast typically enjoys a more temperate climate. Autumn is mild and winter is often cold, however the uplands are notoriously changeable, where it can sleet and snow at any time of year. Spring arrives around September. The best time to visit is during the summer when it is warm enough to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.
Getting Around Devonport & The Northwest
Just 8 kilometres from the City Centre and 5km from the 'Spirit of Tasmania' terminal in East Devonport is Devonport Airport. The Tasmanian Wilderness and Cradle Mountain National Park are both only 80 minutes from the Airport. Devonport itself is serviced by a variety of public and private transport options including bus and taxis. Coach services allow you to travel up and down the northwest coast and regular tour groups travel to many of the surrounding national parks and attractions. Renting a car is a sensible alternative.
