Chill Factor – Australia’s Snow Scene Part II of II

Embrace & Indulge Winter

People all over the world envy Australians, and envy us they should. We live in a country of extreme diversity; we have deserts, rain forest, tropical areas, sand dunes and strangely, mountains that transform into some of the best winter playgrounds in the world after a good snowfall.

Meandering down a ski slope in Australia, surrounded by snow gums that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, you can relax, soothed by the sound of the whooshing snow. What’s more, you can marvel at the fact that in a few months you can swap your skis for thongs and be back on a beach. So, while many of us love the hot sun and dark suntans, with the cold ushering us inside and far away from the beaches, it’s time to take advantage of the wide range of activities our snow-capped mountains offer us this winter.

Reviewing last month’s ‘Chill Factor’ article, discussing the snowy destinations of New South Wales and Victoria, I thought of a skiing hot spot that criminally escaped mention. Mt Hotham has become known as one of the best ski fields in Australia and I urge you to go and find out why.

Mt Hotham – Victorian High Country

Skiing at Mt Hotham is not to be forgotten. Located in the Alpine National Park in the Victorian High Country, 375 kilometres from Melbourne, Hotham is known as the best natural snow terrain in Australia and is a sought after destination as it covers 320 hectares and has 13 lifts, offering something for everyone. If you’re looking for a challenge, the mountain is renowned for its steep valley runs. If easy going, long, pleasurable runs take your fancy, Hotham also offers intermediate runs, tree runs, natural half pipes, gullies and bowls.

But if you only dabble in skiing and snowboarding, there is plenty to do beyond the slopes. With up to twenty unique restaurants, cafés and après ski challets, you can indulge in some fine food amongst spectacular views.

While visiting Hotham, be sure to relax in their beautifully situated alpine accommodation, unusually the best rooms are located at the top of the ridge above all of the ski runs. On a clear day, you will be sure to experience some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia - why not so do with a steaming hot chocolate or glass of hot wine...

With constant talk of Australians shivering this winter - we're experiencing the coldest temperatures in 30 years - it's no surprise that ski conditions are great this year. With the fall of more and more snow, Hotham Alpine Resort has just announced the opening of additional slopes and ski lifts just in time for the school holidays; so don’t miss out as more snow means more fun!

Tasmania

By now we have well established that Australia is far from just a tropical paradise, and that we should all make the most of super snowy slopes this winter. If travelling off the great mainland takes your fancy, why not pack your skis and head off to Tasmania?

Tasmania doesn’t immediately come to mind as a ski destination, unlike NSW and VIC, but it is definitely not to be overlooked. The Tasmanian ski season extends from mid July into September, giving you plenty of time to cross the Bass Strait and enjoy the snow. It not only offers a break away from the mainland but less crowded ski slopes, a range of facilities - for both downhill & cross-country skiing - spectacular alpine scenery, and a magnificent range of wildlife.

Ben Lomond – Enjoy Uncrowded Slopes

If downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing is what you want, Ben Lomond National Park is the place for you. Only an hour and a half's drive from Launceston lays Tasmania’s largest ski area, a rich playground with a range of runs, diverse wildlife, and the best part – no crowds. Relax on the long smooth slopes amongst the beautiful Tasmanian scenery far away from any hustle and bustle.

Mt Field National Park et al. – Something for Everyone

Mt Field is also a great ski destination. With magnificent high-level routes, it is a cross-country skiing lover's dream; however, for the daredevil inside, you will also find one of the steepest runs in the country here.

Mt Mawson is only an hour and a half’s drive from Hobart and gets a great coverage of snow all season long, but make sure you are confident on your skis because the only way of getting up the mountain is by rope tow. Mt Mawson is also a great place to enjoy wilderness walks that range from half hour walks to two & three day hikes.  Whatever your commitment level to stimulating outside endorphins, you can't go wrong soaking up the magnificent Tasmanian scenery.

Tasmanian mountains offer something you won’t want to miss.  All things considered, don’t forget the most appealing part of taking your ski vacation in Tasmania; you're using the quest for powder as an excuse to explore this stunning state. Good food, wine, culture and spectacular scenery are only a few of the treasures to be uncovered in Tasmania.

From Victoria and New South Wales to Tasmania, it is obvious that Australia has transformed into an exciting snowy playground this winter and awaits people of all ages and interests. With temperatures dropping and this year's deep snow cover in the mountains, there's never been a better time to pack your snow boots, skis and thermals and enjoy the beautiful weather. But if you do plan on tearing up the slopes, skiing or snowboarding, I advise you to keep an eye on snow conditions to find out the holiday hotspots - chances are they're going to be good!
