Cooking school brings the world to Wilston
[Alternative heading: Cooking school brings an exotic new flavor to Wilson]
It's only been a few months since Zimbabwean-born chef Melanie Townsend opened the Vanilla Zulu cooking
school at Wilston, but she's managed to transform a once-desolate Macgregor Street laneway into a vibrant
social and learning hub.
Locals have been quick to embrace Vanilla Zulu and, due to popular demand, Townsend has already expanded
her business to include "Men Behaving Badly" cooking sessions and cuisines from far-reaching places such as
Cuba, Portugal and the Middle East [you can change these places – just examples!].
The school will even be hosting special junior chef classes during the school holidays.
"Wilston has been very welcoming and proven a perfect fit for a cooking school like Vanilla Zulu, which is as
much about indulging the taste buds and enjoying quality time with friends and co-workers as it is about learning
the tricks of the trade," said Townsend.
Townsend, a chef for more than 20 years, said popular shows such as Masterchef and My Kitchen Rules can
make the culinary world appear intimidating for shy or reluctant cooks.
"When people think of cooking schools, they often have visions of high-pressure classes performed by intense
instructors using a tonne of jargon," said Townsend. "Although the team building events I host include some
friendly competition, classes at Vanilla Zulu are much more relaxed and social and I think that's why our style
has really taken off."
Not to neglect the more advanced cooks, Townsend said Vanilla Zulu has technique-focussed ‘master classes'
to satisfy serious foodies, including a cheese-making course to be debuted in the new year.
Vanilla Zulu Culinary Adventures is located at 1 Macgregor Street, Wilston and offers one-off or six-week
cookery courses and tailored classes. The school is a perfect venue for company/club meetings, team-building
events, dinner parties, celebrations or just a fun night out.
Arrange a class of more than 10 people and the organizer gets the class free.
