Shimmer Restaurant & Bar Overview

After years of searching, chefs/owners Mark and Alison Marshall found the perfect venue to start their own restaurant: Shimmer Restaurant & Bar in Gerringong on the NSW south coast. With floor to ceiling glass windows and a large balcony, Shimmer boasts stunning views out towards Werri Beach. They have converted locals into regulars with their friendly, welcoming service and impressive, reasonably priced dishes. What's more, everything on Shimmer's menu, from bread to ice-cream, is made fresh daily on site. There's a myriad of seafood choices and a big emphasis on quality local produce; options could include barramundi teamed with king prawns, squid, chorizo, char grilled corn and white bean ragout.

Shimmer Restaurant & Bar is located on the NSW south coast in the small but beautiful surfing town of Gerringong, just 40 minutes south of Wollongong, 2 hours south of Sydney & 2.5 hours east of Canberra.

THE AMBIENCE
Opened in March 2011 with great success, Shimmer is the first of a new style of restaurant and bar on the south coast of NSW. Together with clean modern lines, Australian timber furniture and custom-made glass panels depicting the ocean, the restaurant boasts a beautiful marbletop cocktail/champagne bar and floor to ceiling glass windows offering million dollar views of the best surf coast in NSW.

A laidback, almost café-like atmosphere characterises Shimmer by day while at night, clothed and candlelit tables bring a touch of class, complemented by friendly and professional staff.

The large balcony, with its spectacular views, is an outstanding place to enjoy an early morning breakfast, late lunch, quiet candlelit dinner or special occasion.

SHIMMER RESTAURANT & BAR MENU
Offering modern Australian cuisine, the menu at Shimmer Restaurant & Bar changes regularly to take advantage of the best seasonal produce. Everything – from bread and pasta to ice-cream – is made on site to ensure quality and consistency. Wherever possible the kitchen uses local produce from not only Gerringong but the whole NSW south coast and highlands. The standard is simple: seasonal, fresh and nothing but the best quality!

Fresh seafood like local kingfish and abalone and (when available) Queensland mud crab features prominently on the menu and much of the fresh produce comes from the chefs' own garden. The coffee is an organic blend, created especially for the restaurant by small, independent boutique roasters; even the tea is blended locally, at The Berry Tea Shop.

Shimmer Restaurant & Bar offers gluten free and vegetarian options and can cater for any special dietary requirements.

Shimmer Restaurant & Bar has a small but excellent wine list with a range of local wines, French champagnes, and fine Australian and New Zealand wines. The restaurant also has an extensive beer menu consisting of international and Australian beers, including local and micro-brewery beers.

Once again Graeme and I returned to Shimmer this time for my birthday, WOW what a night Mark has outdone himself again with his 6 course Degustation menu one of those OMG moments times 6. We were welcomed with great smiles and happy birthdays from the girls and Michael and a remembered Martini for myself. From the very first bite to the last we were yet again blown away by the talent of this remarkable CHEF. After such a dinner we decided to sample Sunday Breakfast and once again it was simply delisious. Eggs Benidict to die for! Go to Gerringong Go to Shimmer don't waste your time reading about it just go enjoy its worth the trip. Don't need to wish Mark good luck he just needs to keep doing what he is!!! Graeme and Beth.

We were greeted at the door with a welcome smile which prepared us for the excellent service that was to follow. Yes, the quality of the food is important but so is the service.
The food was beautifully prepared and with a difference - black pudding was in my pork medallion.
The opportunity to have a tasting plate between the two of us was much appreciated as we both have a sweet tooth and really couldn't decide what to have.
Full marks to Ebony, our waitress, who brought sunshine into the evening.
My only but - not enough vegetables, but this sems to be the case these days. My contention is that the mark of a good chef is properly cooked vegetables and the brussel sprouts were an interesting choice and superb.
My friend, who is a local, wondered whether it was just too fancy for Gerringong but I hope not as the food was very upmarket but the price wasn't.
