Exmouth, on the protected side of North West Cape, was founded in 1967 as a support town for the Communications Station previously run by the US Navy and in October 1992, taken over by the Royal Australian Navy. The station, which is a restricted military area, has 13 towers all more than 300 metres high and can be seen from the road. The town provides modern facilities for entertainment, sport and recreation, but fishing is the number one pastime for most visitors.
