Two large islands, Flinders Island and King Island, jut like horns into the Bass Strait from Tasmania's northeast and northwest extremities. First explored by Matthew Flinders, the island that bears his name was at first used by Europeans as a sealing ground. Then for a while it was reserved for the Aboriginals who had survived the war of extermination.
