Located on the Tropic of Capricorn, Longreach with its long hot, dry summers and short winters is the centre for a prosperous wool and beef cattle area. The name of the town derives from a long reach of the Thomson River which was used as a camping ground by teamsters hauling wool and tallow from the back country to the coast in the 1860's. The town was declared in 1887.
