If Only It Were B.Y.O Hammock
I could live here... I really could. Last night I was gifted one of the most extraordinarily delightful evenings I have experienced in quite some time. One that I could easily argue was the epitome of harmony. Everything about The Baby Grand is beautifully balanced and carries with it an air of tasteful flamboyance while being self-aware enough to deliver its aesthetic with mesmerizing charm and a dignified humility. Just around the corner from the West End's main strip, the venue is dead simple to reach and super convenient if you're looking for a quick meal before the open mic begins. On entering the space, I was overwhelmed by the magic it possesses that seamlessly flows from corner to corner. A mixture of striking colours embedded in several stunning artworks, the different shades of the bottles in the very well stocked bar, the rainbow spines of all the books on several shelves. And these aren't just your obligatory, ‘the op-shop didn't want them’, leftovers. It's a fantastic selection of titles from a wide array of magnificent authors ranging many genres. One of the loveliest things I found with The Baby Grand’s open mic (and general philosophy) was the way that it is so encouraging and genuinely interested in seeing what others have to offer. But never once did it allow itself to exert any pressure or expectation. You can just do you and know that that is enough. The character, intoxicating warmth and gentleness of the venue is abundant in its staff and patrons as well. You really do feel like you've been enthusiastically invited into a splendid, spacious, living room of friends that also happens to be a terrific bar and creation hub. If you're a budding writer or musician, or someone who really digs a great cup of chai, or have a few jokes to spill, or may be a bit introverted and want to leave the house but be assured a comfy corner elsewhere - this is the place to do it!
