Like many other tourists visiting Brisbane, we found an information centre to find places to go, and things to do. The most appealing for us was an evening dinner cruise, enjoying good dining as the lights of the city glided past, oh so romantic. The Kookaburra River Queens were built in the 1980's for the world expo,1988 at South Brisbane, now South Bank. Since then the paddle steamer wheelers, built in the style of the old "Mississippi Steamers" have become an integral part of Brisbane's identity as a cruising restaurant, function centre and a popular river tourist attraction. The two paddle wheelers are different in style, we went on the three story version which has a function room and board room on the third floor, the middle and lower floors having almost identical dining rooms, with tongue and groove timber walls and ceilings, in median stain Australian timbers, each has a buffet food section and a stage area for live music with a bar on each floor. Around each level there is a covered deck area, with turned wooden railings, all very charming and "Olde Worlde" The smorgasbord was first class, a cold selection of, oyster, prawns, crab, with different salads, and fried breads. A hot selection of, roast pork, roast beef and a red wine beef casserole, Thai chicken drum sticks, rice, noodles, lasagne, salt and pepper calamari, with a good assortment of hot vegetables. The desserts were, pavlova topped with fruit and cream, assorted squares, and a cheese platter. The food was plentiful, and satisfying, with something for everybody. For us this was a very memorable, wonderful evening, with the twinkling lights of Brisbane's high rise buildings, combining with the live music to create a relaxing, romantic ambience, magical. Whatever your occasion, a scenic lunch cruise, romantic dinner for two, Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary, Christmas party, the Kookaburra River Queens would delight.
