After a day of exploring Port Fairy, we were looking to find a quiet place for a rejuvenating cup of tea. At the Clonmara Tearooms we were not disappointed! The setting is perfect; a beautiful cottage garden, leading into a cottage which has several tables in one of the front rooms, a gift-shop in the other and a charming little courtyard out the back. The menu was laden with a delicious selection of very British dishes including smoked kippers, spotted dick and of course scones - of which we decided to have. There is also a wonderful selection of teas to choose from; we went for Earl Grey and the wonderfully smoky Russian Caravan. The menu states that "well-behaved children are welcome", which was enough of a prompt for my 4-year-old daughter to be on HER best behaviour and want to impress our hosts! They also state that there is no children's menu, which I am actually in favour of in this sort of establishment. There are times where I believe kids should learn to appreciate foods other than chicken nuggets and chips! The fruit scones are baked fresh, and are TRULY fruitful! (Pardon the pun!) Not just a few random sultanas here, it's a scone chock-full of dates, apricots and of course, sultanas. All served with delicious, lightly salted butter. After our meal, our attentive hosts insisted we meet their gorgeously sooky dog, who lives onsite where the B&B is also located. Sam the Hungarian Puli is reason enough to return here! As well, we found in the gift-shop (and purchased!) postcards, local art and beautiful jewellery. A beautiful way to end the day, and I would thoroughly recommend visitng Clonmara for the ultimate British afternoon tea experience with real honest British hospitality.
