When it comes to seafood, few do it as well as Rick Stein at Bannisters, located within the grounds of Bannisters by the Sea in Mollymook. Whether you visit for the restaurant experience or let it be part of a pampering package, the coastal views don’t end on the road; this is a waterfront venue and every diner has an ocean panorama. The beach-chic setting is comfortable, classy and understated and the food exquisitely prepared – look out for dishes like ponzu Atlantic salmon, pink grapefruit, daikon and nori, or crispy smoked trout pâté, sourdough, pickled rhubarb, cornichons and fried capers. For a tantalising main, try braised beef short ribs, mash, roasted carrots and gremolata, or pan-seared duck breast, confit leg, braised red cabbage, Jerusalem artichoke purée and blackberry sauce.

Though we went for dinner, if you have the chance, definitely go in the day time. The view from Bannisters is completely worth it and you can’t see much of it all in darkness. Rick Stein’s restaurant has a sitting room with his cookbooks, a fireplace, big comfy couches and even a glass chessboard. If you like sitting and reading, this is the place for you. If you like freshly caught and prepared seafood, book a table in his restaurant. There are lots of quirky seaside elements such as old, cut up bottles and wicker style baskets or netting that make up the lampshades, there are plenty of sandy tones like the tables and chairs and the waiters wear an endearing uniform of sandy coloured trousers, white shirts and some wore suspenders with a full apron over the top. If you are allergic to fish, it's probably a good idea to find another venue. If you love fish, or are just getting used to it, be sure to go for the scallops, prawns, sashimi, battered fish, crab, lobster and mixed seafood linguine. Ask your waiter for a recommendation on wine to enjoy with your meal and they will more than happily oblige. The manager and waiters were all very lovely and we were even able to meet the chef who seemed very nice and happy to chat to us. Bannisters also showed support for other local businesses, interested to hear where we had been and where we were going and even had a few suggestions on places for us to visit. Thank-you Rick Stein at Bannisters, we really had a lovely time dining in your restaurant.

New Years Eve lunch at the restaurant. Highly recommend the meringe dessert, fish pie worth the visit for those one off ocassions!
