Exception Restaurant and Wine Bar in Double Bay
Bibo is one of those glorious discoveries when searching for good wine and equally good food in Sydney. Tucked away in a terrace on Bay Street Double Bay, it is tardis-like upon entering via its side lane. The darkly decorated and wine-bottle filled interior sets the mood. The friendly service is welcoming as you take a seat at a table up at the long bar or out the back in the alfresco-style restaurant. On a dreary weekend, we took ourselves off to Bibo to discover the excellent 'Wine By the Glass' list as well as the Portuguese inspired menu. The sommelier was enthusiastic without a hint of austerity as we showed an interest in the wine selection (which was worth the visit alone). However, it is the food that also sets Bibo apart from just being a 'wine bar'. Chef Jose Silva (he of Portuguese tart fame) is a stellar feature of this already luxe venue. His delightful menu includes memorable dishes of Heirloom tomatoes, capsicum + Oritz anchovies - Octopus, cabbage + Sobrassada - Lamb, peas, capsicum + potato & jus. It sounds simple but it is a delicious menu that is understandably popular. The crescendo is by far the warm Portuguese tarts with his signature dusting of cinnamon that escapes into a plume as you breathe and indulge. Bibo Wine Bar is a must-try food and wine destination for anyone looking for that little bit of 'somethin, somethin'. We did and it was a pretty good somethin'.
