About Black Star Pastry Newtown

Black Star Pastry has been delighting Newtown with sweet and savoury treats since 2008. A uniquely experimental Sydney patisserie, Black Star Pastry has an eclectic style – bold in design and sweet as pie in service and taste – that attracts those looking to spice up their mundane snack times with a flavoursome kick, fresh from the oven. Every pastry and piece of cake is made by hand, using natural ingredients and artisanal techniques, such as Black Star's signature strawberry and watermelon cake, featuring fresh and fragrant layers of almond dacquoise, topped with Iranian pistachios and served with rose scented cream. While savouries such as the spinach and mushroom pithivier make undeniably moreish lunch choices, best accompanied by a coffee, iced tea or fresh juice.

This teeny tiny place was absolutely packed when we visited! The barista was also the one to serve us as we squished into a short, zig-zagged line through the petite space by the pastry cabinets. We couldn’t resist – my friend ordered the iconic watermelon cake and coffee and to try and find something different to enjoy, I asked for the pear tart with a pistachio dust and I had a soy cappuccino. I enjoyed everything I ordered and my friend said the watermelon cake is definitely better fresh from the Black Star Pastry cabinet as she had previously tried it takeaway, eating it later on. There are hardly any chairs, and we ended up in the space next door – we had to carry our coffees and cakes outside, down the footpath and into the sitting room for the café. The tables and chairs in here were also quite small. If you don’t mind it, the smallness also adds to the charm and rustic look inside.
