New Year's Resolutions - Fact or Fiction?

New Year's Resolutions - Fact or Fiction?

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, are they really what they’re all cracked up to be?

As we prepare for life in 2018 and contemplate the past 12 months, we all have highs and lows, happy times and regrets – single or in a relationship, the future looms large and we crave to change things that haven’t worked.

To quote Carrie Bradshaw, what girl doesn’t want to kiss the boy that they like, coming into the New Year?

But for many of us, this isn’t going to happen. Does that make us less of a person because we have no significant other? Or is it a triumph to survive in a world that revolves around relationships and how we cope with them?

Why do we let the one thing we don’t have affect all the things we do have?New Year's Resolutions - Fact or Fiction?

As the clock strikes 12am, many of us will make resolutions we know we won’t keep - giving up a favourite vice, planning a new career, wishing for a soul mate, or just plain wanting to be happy.

We all pretend for at least a few days, we will change… when really all we need to do is accept who we are and learn to live with that person.

Why is that we can see our friends perfectly, but when it comes to ourselves, no matter how hard we look, do we ever see ourselves clearly?

The best New Year’s Resolution you can make is to believe in yourself and that things happen for a reason. If you didn’t get that promotion, maybe there is something better waiting for you out there. If you didn’t get to travel in 2017, make it happen in 2018.

And if you are looking for a soul mate – when did it stop being fun and start being scary?

Embrace the moment and take a chance in life, whether it is personal or professional, because only good things can come if you are willing to put yourself out there. In a world obsessed with youth, money and power, are we getting wiser or just older?

Many of us detest some (or all) parts of our appearance – whether it is our weight, hair, height or age. If models can cause otherwise rational individuals to crumble in their presence, exactly how powerful is beauty?New Year's Resolutions - Fact or Fiction?

Be kind to yourself, look in the mirror and say "I am beautiful the way I am and if others don’t see that, they are not beautiful themselves.” When did we stop being free to be you and me?

There are times when criticism that’s constructive becomes destructive and people should just keep their thoughts to themselves. As we speed along this endless road to a destination called ‘Who we hope to be,’ we can’t help but whine, are we there yet?

So, as we prepare to see in another New Year and toast our glasses to a brighter, better future.

Remember… when it comes to bags, men and cities – is it really what’s on the outside that counts?

Happy New Year everyone!
