The Country Homestead that ticks all the boxes
We enjoyed the most incredibly relaxing weekend in this beautiful homestead, overlooking the Liverpool Plains, in August. The sunsets are extraordinary; sitting out there near the vegie patch with a roaring fire and a glass of wine and meze, well it's not the way the early settlers would have done it, but we're sure they were just as appreciative of the beauty! The accommodation is comfortable and they have done a great job of keeping this an authentic grand homestead without compromising on today's essentials. Rowen's a well-known Australian artist and viewing the artwork is worth the trip by itself. The food is a real step up and I'd rate as equivalent to what we experience in top Sydney restaurants and pay around $100/head for. As it turns out Cathy has a very respected pedigree in cooking/catering and it really shows here. Try the Greek Lamb if it's on the menu. Lastly, this is a real country homestead and we saw, quite close-up, all the wildlife you'd expect; kangaroos, koalas, an echidna, cockatoos, galahs etc. Well worth it.

The perfect country escape!
Living in the heart of Sydney is of course exciting but every now and then I need a weekend away to recharge. Little Kickerbell was the perfect place for us. We were surrounded by the Liverpool plains, looking over an endless landscape. Cathy's husband was more than happy to take us on a tour of the homestead with an explanation of its impressive history (which also happens to boast an impressive art collection that Rowen has curated over the years). In the evening we could enjoy a gin & tonic on the wrap around verandah and breathe in the calm country air. The food was fantastic with a menu that featured local produce. Everything was delicious. I would highly recommend a visit to Little Kickerbell, we left rested and revitalised.

The Beautiful Ambience of Little Kickerbell
We spent a couple of days being totally spoilt by Little Kickerbell's very talented and gorgeous new owners, Cathy Armstrong and Rowen Matthews. They offer superbly presented guest rooms in a large and elegant historic farmhouse, and mouth-watering cuisine of the highest quality. Our warm, witty and generous hosts entertained us with pre-dinner drinks around a large brazier, the soft colours of sunset melting into dusky twilights over the Liverpool Plains. Rowen's cosy fire in the Dining Room. Cathy's amazing and imaginative culinary delights. Whiskeys and laughter in the Billiard Room. Leisurely breakfasts on the wide verandah. Rowen's masterful and colourful paintings everywhere. A comfy, beautifully furnished lounge room filled with books and conversations. An 1820's sandstone schoolhouse converted into Rowen's impressive studio. Tastefully revamped Shearer's Quarters offering accommodation for artists' residencies. A truly wonderful experience. Can't wait to go back.

Beautiful accommodation on the Liverpool Plains
My husband and I had a lovely overnight stay at Little Kickerbell on our way back from Sydney to Brisbane. We decided we wanted to stay somewhere a bit off the beaten track and not in an impersonal hotel, so stumbled across Little Kickerbell when looking for accommodation in the Quirindi area. Very friendly hosts, lovely room opening onto a huge verandah with views across the Plains and yummy home cooked breakfast with excellent coffee. Highly recommend.
