Broome, situated on Roebuck Bay, is a town forever associated with the colourful pearl-diving trade. William Dampier first landed in Broome in 1699 but it was almost two hundred years later on 21st November when the town was officially gazetted and named in honor of the then Governor of Western Australia, Sir Frederick Napier Broome. Broome prospered in the pearling trade, although the cost of human life was enormous until plastic put an end to the demand for pearl shell.
