About Samson Hill Estate
A promising hill sitting beside an extinct volcano millions of years old on the outskirts of Melbourne, lay bare of all vegetation without a single tree and very little water.
Steven & Pago Sampson saw the potential of the land which had rich black volcanic soil and sweeping million dollar views stretching from Mt Dandenong across the City skyline, spanning Mt Macedon and Kinglake.
In 1997 they bought the 26 acre "hill" and the labor of love commenced with the first vines planted - Shiraz on the North slope - Pinot Noir on the south west slope - Verdelho on the eastern slope. After much hard work, the maiden wine was produced in 2001, a young rich Pinot Noir which received a "Commendation" in the Victorian Wine Show.
Subsequent vintages have produced wines of quality which have won "Peoples Choice Award" competing against 23 other local wineries - mentioned in James Halliday's Wine Companion as "a Pinot Noir with attitude" marked at 92.
The Quest had only just begun and in 2005 the barrel room was converted to a Restaurant which now boasts fine food, excellent staff who share the passion of the owners, a warm relaxing atmosphere where many couples have shared their vows, numerous people have celebrated birthdays, Mother's Day, Valentines Day, Fathers Day and many other events.
We are open every day including, Good Friday, Christmas day and New Years Eve.
The drought has changed the attitude of the grape growing process and more water conserving methods have been adapted for the future years vintages. The aim will be a higher quality wine.
With the popularity of the Restaurant growing, different varieties of wine are being sourced from other local wineries - we actively promote local tourism in this beautiful, unique region only 35 mins from the bustling city precinct.
