Mexicali Rose Overview

For some 30 years Mexicali Rose has been the home of authentic Mexican cuisine in Melbourne. Lovers of fine Mexican food have descended in their droves on this reliable favourite, located in Richmond. Try the Chimichanga de Carne o Pollo - grilled beef (or chicken if you prefer) pieces, fresh tomato salsa, coriander & cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla & baked until crisp, topped with sour cream & Santa Fe style BBQ sauce. Served with rice & a salad, this dish won't leave you hungry! There's a selection of 35 imported tequilas to choose from & the passionfruit margaritas are simply sensational. Service is friendly & relaxed, made more authentic by the Latin American waitstaff.

IT'S MEXICAN
Mexicali Rose is a Richmond institution for lovers of fine Mexican food, having been around for some 30 years.

Lori Horton has owned it for the past 7 years now and continues to offer the same authentic style that was served all those years ago as well as some new additions such as nuevo cocina dishes. The use of fresh produce and a commitment to visual presentation is evident with every dish.

THE FOOD
The food here is full of flavour and portions are generous enough to satisfy even the largest of appetites. For those of you that can simply not get enough of Mexicali Rose you can pick up a copy of their cookbook, 'Mexicali Rose - Authentic Mexican Cooking'. Mexicali even stocks some hard to come by specialty ingredients so you can recreate their recipes to perfection. See the website for more details.

For a tongue-tingling taste sensation, indulge in an entree of enchiladas and a main course of beef fajitas or a chicken chimichanga.

SERVICE
Whilst there has almost always been the token Mexican staff member, for the past couple of years now Lori has added to the authenticity and atmosphere of the restaurant by recruiting a number of Mexicans, Colombians and other Latin Americans. Service is friendly and waitstaff are always more than happy to have a conversation or take your order in their native Spanish tongue.

SETTING AND DÉCOR
The rustic decor is enhanced by yellow and blue coloured walls and arches. Having recently expanded, Mexicali Rose now has a fabulous and very spacious Mexican bar which is definitely worth a visit for a delicious margarita or Mexican beer. The cocktail menu is vast and your bar host will prepare you a hand-shaken margarita or, if you prefer, you can select from 35 imported tequilas.
