The Great Eastern Hakka Restaurant Overview

There’s no shortage of Chinese restaurants around Melbourne, so what makes the Great Eastern Hakka Restaurant in Mount Waverley so different? Well for one thing it’s the only Chinese restaurant I can think of that has Swedish style pizzas on the menu. Yes, there’s no misprint, Swedish style pizzas are made to order! Salmon Pizza is made interesting with homemade cured salmon, crème fraiche, fish roe, dill, chives and a dash of fresh lime juice. More traditional south-eastern China dishes include grilled duck fillet with Hakka style hoisin sauce, lightly battered crunchy spicy sea salt squid and classic stir-fried pork. Servings are generous and service, overseen by owner Jenny Lee, is earnest but subtle.

Great Eastern is a unique Asian dining experience that offers sophisticated and high quality cuisine at value prices. The creative menu has been brought to you with much love and dedication to gastronomy from the huge Hakka Chinese community that once lived in India & Sweden!

The menu consists of dishes that are cooked in a variety of styles, such as Cantonese, Hakka and pizza. The friendly staff are always happy to serve you, and the excellent décor provides customers with a truly Asian experience.

Great Eastern is owned and operated by a Chinese family that has worked hard to develop a successful concept for oriental dining. In 1978, they decided to start their own restaurant in Sweden, and were met with great success.

Duck Pizza – tomato sauce, cheddar cheese, mushroom, red & green capsicum and roasted duck fillet garnished with spring onions & house made hoisin sauce; or Zaou Shui Eye Fillet - stir fried eye fillet in Chinese wine & pickled vegetables.

Dishes on the main menu are standard, and our House Specials change yearly to keep the tasting palate wanting for more different flavours that we can offer!
All the dishes served, from a simple spring roll to pizza to Chinese stir fries to our Swedish meals, are house prepared & made fresh to order. We use quality ingredients & have our meats & vegetables freshly delivered to shop front by qualified suppliers.

We cater to all types of dietary needs, be it vegetarian, gluten-free, or any other allergies.

We are licensed & BYO (wine only). We have a decent range of red & white wines, as well as beers listed in the menu.

The restaurant is run by sister-brother duo, Jenny & Steve, together with their spouses. Born in Kolkata, India during tough times, the family later migrated to Sweden in the 80's. It was there, they learnt the art of making Swedish style pizzas as well as Swedish cooking (hence the Swedish Christmas Buffet). After 2 decades in Sweden & many restaurants later, they decided to move to a warmer country. They chose Australia after Jenny's holiday down under in 2003; from spicy to subtle palates, we cater to all tastes.

The setting is modern with high backed leather chairs, booths for more privacy, crisp white linen in a warm red interior. Unlike the usual chopsticks & bowl fanfare of Chinese restaurants; the tables are set in Western knife & fork setting to cater to those who might order the Swedish pizza. Although we do have chopsticks on hand.
