Since its foundation in the 19th century, Portland has become an important western Victorian pastoral and agricultural area. Portland Bay was sighted by Lieutenant James Grant in the 'Lady Nelson' on the first passage through the Bass Strait in 1800. Settled in 1834 by the Henty brothers, Portland has several good beaches and places of historical interest, with many of the old buildings from the first settlement still in use.
