The district around Ararat is scenically attractive with a number of lakes and the magnificent Grampian Mountains nearby. The first squatters arrived here five years after Major Mitchell's exploration of the area in 1836. In 1857 a brief but productive gold strike swelled the population to 20,000 but by the 1860's sheep farming had become the major industry.
