Starting with 7 courses we quickly switched to 9 after tasting the first dish. Although each dish was exceptional, the stand out was definitely the ducks tongue. The wine matching was also exceptional and was by far the best matching I have had with some unusual and surprising choices. The restaurant is a little out of the way but more than worth the trip.

Hidden in the back blocks of the Bellarine Peninsula. It is set in amongst a native garden with views over the Bellarine Peninsula (though admittedly at night there is nothing to see). The big surprise is when you get to the table and the waiter hands you the menu. The menu is not a menu of dishes but of ingredients. Instead of picking what you want you are asked to nominate what ingredients you do not like and how many courses you would like. The waiting staff are not only service professionals but also have a great deal of knowledge about the ingredients. The owners have elected to have professional development where the staff goes to the suppliers (mostly local Victorian produce) to learn about the ingredients. The result is well informed and enthusiastic staff (though I am not sure I agree with our waiter when he says that he thinks duck tongues are the best thing you will put in your mouth – as you can imagine this caused a lot of giggling amoungst the ladies I was with). The wine list is of a good size and well chosen – once again featuring local wines as well as some other specials. I elected to let the waiting staff match to the dishes (given once again they had tried the wines). The resultant dishes: 1. Prawn, rhubarb, milk, lemon verbena – 2010 Lethbridge Pinot Gris 2. Yolk, white turnip, sticking nettle, sherry vinegar – 2009 Kanta By Egon Müller Riesling 3. Wild barramundi, anchovy, avocado, pork fat – 2009 Meridies Soave Classico 4. Duck tongues, salsify, chickweed, horseradish – 2010 Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 5. Lamb rump, celeriac, cape weed, pea, pear – 2007 Amietta Shiraz-Lagrien 6. St Agur, apple, potato, celery – 2006 Jurançon Clos Guirouilh 7. Mandarin, almond, black truffle – 2010 Lethbridge ‘Dr Nadeson Riesling’ 8. Butter beetroot, walnut oil, orange – Disznoko Tokaji Late Harvest Furmit So what was it like – it was a meal to remember in the best meaning thereof.
