Burnie, situated at the mouth of the Emu River, is an important port and railway junction with a large paper-manufacturing industry. Founded in 1829, the town boomed in the 1870's when it became the supply port and outlet for the Mt Bischoff tin mine. The Emu Bay Railway Company still carries minerals to the port from several of the west coast mining centres.
