Settled before the western Victorian goldrush developed in the mid-nineteenth century, the town became an important supply depot for the goldfields and remains a useful and refreshing stopover on the road to and from Victoria. There is a gum-shaded picnic reserve beside a small stream on the eastern edge of the town, and a wildlife sanctuary nearby.
