Western Downs Restaurant, Accommodation & Travel Highlights

About Western Downs

The Western Downs region is truly where you can escape the pressures of everyday life and do as much or as little as you please. The region prides itself on its old-fashioned country hospitality and provides a natural alternative to the cities and beaches of the coastal area. Follow in the footsteps of early pioneers and enjoy all the things that make this region completely unique. Just three hours drive west of Brisbane, the Western Downs can be explored while touring some of Queensland’s major arterial highways: the Great Inland Way, Warrego, Leichhardt and Gore. Discover wide open spaces and the rich pioneering history of real Queensland country. The principal towns are Roma, Chinchilla, Goondiwindi & St George. Sample delicious stone fruits straight from the grower, enjoy great inland fishing, explore the region's history and heritage, take a bushwalk in spectacular national parks, cleanse your pallet at a classic Aussie Pub, or share the romance of an open log fire.

When to Visit Western Downs

The Western Downs boast four distinct seasons. During the winter - cold frosty mornings are followed by cool, crisp clear days (Temperatures average between 5 - 20 degrees C.). In Spring – the mornings are still cool but the day warms up quickly. (Temperatures average between 10 - 27 degrees C.). Throughout the Summer – the nights are cool however the days generally average around 25 Degrees C. (Temperatures average between 18 - 30 degrees C.). During the Autumn months – the days become cooler and warmth of a fire starts to become inviting again (Temperatures average between 5 - 25 degrees C.).

Getting Around Western Downs

There are small regional airports at most of the major towns. Rail and coach services also reach much of the region. Being such a spread out region however, the Western Downs is best explored with your own vehicle. Much of the region is accessible by family sedan, however a 4WD is recommended if you don’t want to miss plenty of opportunities to “go bush” and explore spectacular scenery.
