About Townsville and Surrounds

The second largest city in Queensland and main commercial centre of northern Queensland, Townsville sprawls along the shores of Cleveland Bay and around the foot of Castle Hill. The charm of this lovely region encompasses beautiful coastal towns, rainforests, rugged Outback and country terrain. Head in any direction and you’ll be rewarded! National parks are home to rare butterflies and birds, kangaroos, platypus and ancient trees. Many of these also boast beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, visitors can truly enjoy the stunning natural beauty, rich history and fabulous attractions. The regions colourful history is shaped by Aboriginal tribes, miners, pastoralists and war. Remnants of these bygone times are still evident in the beautiful colonial architecture, historic pubs, museums and displays of old gold mining machinery and cottages. The region is also well known for the amazing range of museums, theatre, dance and arts and crafts.

When to Visit Townsville and Surrounds

Townsville & Environs has a tropical climate but, due to its geographical location, rainfall is not as high as elsewhere in the tropics. The winter months are dominated by mostly fine weather - blue skies, warm days and cool nights (although every now and then you can experience a few days of showery weather). The summer months are hot and humid with "build-up" thunderstorms starting in late October/November. Bursts of monsoon rains from late December through until early April delivers the highest rainfalls, and this is also the season that Tropical Cyclones can threaten the region. Severe Tropical Cyclones however are rare, effecting Townsville on average once every twenty years.
