The heart of the Torres Strait Islands, Thursday Island is situated in Australia's north, 39 kilometres off the mainland. The northernmost point of Queensland, Thursday Island is the capital of the 14 inhabited Torres Strait Islands, home to a population of some 2,500 residents. With a relatively mild temperature all year round, outdoor activities are always undertaken on the island, with fishing and diving the major economic source.
The Japanese Pearl Memorial is one of the islands popular attractions, dedication to the hundreds of pearl divers who died from decompression sickness. Additionally, the old cannons situated on the top of Green Hill Fort are also well worth a look, doubling as a picturesque vantage point for Thursday Island sunsets.
