Amidst the breathtaking wonder of the Great Barrier Reef lay 74 little pieces of heaven, complete with white beaches, gourmet food and clear, inviting waters. Combined, these islands are known as the Whitsundays and are one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Northeast of Mackay and Airlie Beach, the Whitsundays are a popular cruising destination, complete with fishing line and wine glass in hand. A location for lazing in luxury, the islands of the Whitsundays are home to the well known getaways of Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and South Molle Island. Resort style accommodation is available on eight of the islands, with the others being seclusive pieces of tropical paradise.

Hamilton Island is the largest of the Whitsunday Island resorts and offers visitors attractions such as golfing on the only championship island golf course in Australia or hopping aboard a yacht and sailing yourself away around the pristine beaches that the Whitsundays offer. Beach cruises are also available and include a gourmet barbecue aboard a luxurious high speed catamaran and a cruise to the idyllic Whitehaven beach where you can soak up the sun in the refreshing waters.
You can also hire your own sailboat to cruise the Whitsundays at your own pace, dropping the anchor for a snorkel here and there, and makes for a perfect day out. Ideally, 74 days on the Whitsundays would be sufficient to leave you a bronzed, tranquil beauty, but failing that, a week or two is just as good.
My husband and I stayed at Daydream Island for our honeymoon and South Molle Island for our 10th anniversary, both were great, well catered for holidays. We intend to go back.
