Gladstone stands on the foreshore of Port Curtis, a magnificent natural harbour protected by Curtis and Facing islands. In the past few years the town has developed into Queensland's largest port, with a colossal tonnage of coal and alumina passing across its wharves. Gladstone was first settled as a penal colony in 1847 and for a while it was a rival of Brisbane for the choice of State Capital.
