Royal English Hotel Overview

The Royal English Hotel is on the corner of Station Street and is in the centre of 'the village' of Nundah, which is now a quiet affair since the main road was detoured through the tunnel. It does have that 'English' feel about it and is popular with the locals who would prefer that not too many others discover it. Its a relaxed friendly pub and if you are looking for a quiet spot to have a jar or a meal, it will fit the bill nicely.

I was taken here for a meal by friends who are regulars. Apparently the food used to be not good, but a new chef has certainly changed that.

I am a heart patient, and on a Low Sodium (Low Salt) diet, most times when I go to pubs or restaurants, this restricts me to Steak, salad and chips with nothing added. This becomes boring.

Imagine my delight then when the chef informed me the slow cooked Lambs Shanks, with braised veggies and mash had no added salt. The shank was perfection, The meat was moist and fell away from the bone in shreds with the touch of my fork. It was braised in herbed tomatoes which complemented the lamb beautifully. The veggies were crisp and flavoursome and the mash was a lovely firm creamy mash, not this soupy sieved stuff some restaurants call mash.
My wife and our friend each had a Chicken, Corn & Pepper pie with veggies. The flavour combination was superb and the pepper did not kill the other ingredients.
One of my friends daughters had a Cajun Salmond dish which she said was "fantastic" and the other daughter had a very large bowl of Leek and Potato soup, which all disappeared to the last drop.
The prices were very reasonable, with the 5 dishes costing us around $94.00.
The pub atmosphere is, well, that of a pub, nice, not overdone, and very clean and tidy, the layout seemed to be a bit of a maze to me but was no problem.
The bar staff could have been a bit smilier but maybe it was a bad night.
My had goes off to the chef though, who I thought had an English accent. He gets about 10-15 people through who have low sodium needs, and he understands it. He was approachable, and above all he can cook. Really cook.
I highly reccomend it.
